about ethical digital

What does it mean to run an ‘ethical’ business? We covered it in some detail here, but it is worth summarising:

It’s a way of doing business, and of delivering services. We want team members – and clients – to prioritise wellbeing, whether that is family, mental health, physical health … however it is framed. We want always to start from a position of kindness.

We want the projects we involve ourselves with to be sustainable and privacy focused. We want them to be accessible and mindful of difference and inclusion.

And we want to focus on the success of our clients, our team, ourselves – while not causing harm to people or planet while doing so.

Sounds pretty lofty. But it’s about behaving responsibly – not just towards the planet, but to each other. Respecting the user, their experience, their abilities and their rights – and doing the same with our team members, and our clients.

We’ve taken the liberty of bundling all these characteristics into a type of organisation we want to work with: Happy Businesses.

We are expanding our commitment to sustainable web development. We’re learning how best to achieve that. Why not learn with us?

To offset the carbon produced by our own website, we plant ten trees per month. If you host your website with us, we will do the same. 10 trees per month – forever. (This website is cleaner than nearly 80% of the web)

Our basic commitment

As a company, we will only host websites with companies that promise a carbon neutral hosting experience. We’re not there yet – we’re moving people over to new servers over the coming months. Together with our commitment to plant 10 trees per month for each hosting client – we hope to make a positive impact on reforestation projects across the globe.

One Tree Planted is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to global reforestation. They plant trees to restore nature and biodiversity. They also raise awareness about the importance of trees, offer businesses like ours a simple sustainability solution, and motivate younger generations to do something positive for the environment. Through One Tree Planted we will plant trees every month, with every hosting plan, and plant 100 trees for every new site launched.

The Ethical Move

In a lot of ways, this business has been inspired by an organisation called The Ethical Move. I came across them in early 2022 and really liked what they stood for – namely that they ‘are committing to transparent, responsible and honest marketing, and we’re asking you to do the same’.

Under the guise of our previous organisation – David Horn Design Ltd. – we took the pledge and continue to honour it over here at Ethical Digital.
